How It All Started
Ever since I was a child growing up in Chelmsford, Essex, I've been fascinated by the world around us. I'd write questions about everything from aardvarks to... well, pretty much anything (I ran out of things beginning with Z that weren't ZZ Top!).
But writing questions as a kid and testing unsuspecting family members is one thing – doing it as an adult and making a living from it? That's something else entirely!
I pretty much "fell into" hosting pub quizzes when the landlord of my local pub asked if I could take over their weekly quiz night. Without hesitation (and having negotiated a small fee!), I agreed. The rest, as they say, is history!
The Turning Point
I have a confession: before that first quiz, I was originally going to get all my questions off the Internet. No originality, no personal touches, no research.
I can't tell you how glad I am that I didn't do that. I would have been cheating myself and my loyal quizgoers, many of whom I now count as friends. There would have been no 'soul' to my quizzes. And they wouldn't really be 'my' quizzes if I'd just copied them from the Internet.
So I made the decision early on to write all my questions myself. This is something I pride myself on – my questions are always original, personal to me, and properly researched.
What I Do Now
What started as a single weekly quiz in Chelmsford has grown into a multitude of quizzes around Essex and beyond!
I currently host regular quizzes at:
- The Good Intent Pub, Hornchurch – every Monday
- The Windmill Pub, Upminster – every Tuesday
- The Noak Bridge Pub, Laindon – every Wednesday
- The Gardeners Pub, Chelmsford – every Thursday
- Datum Attitude Brewery & Taproom, Maldon – every fourth Sunday
I also write and host quizzes for weddings, corporate events, birthday parties, and any occasion where a quiz would be awesome!
Why I Love What I Do
I can write a question on pretty much anything. If I don't know about a topic (worm charming springs to mind as a random example!), I thoroughly enjoy researching it until I feel confident enough to write a question on it.
I always strive to make my questions engaging, fun, and interesting. I've even awarded myself the dual honorary titles of 'Master Easy Question Writer' and 'Master Silly Question Writer'!
People come to my quizzes week after week, month after month, year after year – so I must be doing something right!
